Chemoinformatics Open Source Initiative (COSI)

Industrial Applicability
Creating a professional state-of-the-art open source chemoinformatics environment for industrial applications

Chemoinformatics is of increasing importance for the drug discovery process, materials and nanotech R&D as well as management and workflow of data and knowledge in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

Recent years have seen the emergence of a growing number of powerful open source chemoinformatics packages, with major players released under a license permitting commercialization without further legal caveats. A couple of these projects have joined forces to increase interoperability, stability and usability. These developments are state-of-the-art from an academic perspective but lack trouble-free professional applicability in industrial environments.

The COSI initiative aims to address this deficiency at taking on board partners from industry to provide insights into their needs and to fund developers to professionalize and adapt open source chemoinformatics tools to these needs. The COSI initiative itself has no commercial goals. We are committed to the open source concept and intend to enhance applicability and usability of open source projects in chemoinformatics with the aim of getting a professional software basis by exposing it to real-life scenarios in chemical and pharmaceutical industry workflows.
